Bob Taylor began carving when he was eight years old using a pocketknife his grandfather gave him. Around the age of 11, Bob met Mooney Warther, a legendary carver known for his speed at making wooden pliers and for carving intricate models of steam locomotives. Warther set up his traveling woodcarving museum at the Bartholomew County Fair, and young Bob became enthralled with his display. This...

Making a Bowl Adze with Dave Voges

A bowl adze is a special and hard to find tool used to hew or chop bowls. Machinist and blacksmith Dave Voges began making these special adzes when his friend Keith Ruble asked him if he could help him design better tool. Based on Keith’s bowl-hewing knowledge and Dave’s skill, the two designed what many consider one of the best bowl adzes available. Bowl hewers across Indiana prize these speci...

Thank you for posting this, My nana Maria and papa David are so talented 💜 I love y’all
Proper skillful made it look easy which it definitely isn't
Thank you so much for this video! I play it whenever I need to hear the smile in his voice. If you have any more footage of Baba mi (my father), I would love to see it! Peace and blessings, Tokunbo Adeniyi
So great to hear from you. Your father was a good friend, we did lots of programs together through my work at Traditional Arts Indiana. I am happy to share anything that I have. I believe that this footage was from a longer interview I did, which is probably on a video tape, so I will need to figure out how to transfer it. Let me see what I can figure out.
Having a couple of these timber framed looms, and some other old equipment, I enjoyed this video a lot. I definitely need to upgrade my warping board to one like this gal's at 5:58. Looks like she is warping with at many as 14 warp threads at a time by hand, without using a paddle.
This is wonderful. I weave too, and have been thinking of doing some rag rugs. Thanks for showing what you do.
OMG I live in Villonia right next to Brownstown IN, thats awesome wonder if she is still making rag rugs.
Yes, she is still weaving!
Impressive work!
What an inspiration she is to me as I weave rags
Love the video but the music is to loud
Very nice of you to share part of your history of making rugs and your family included in it. Thank you very much.
I remember Schoolman's Grocery in Bippus and we drove by his lakehouse to get to ours on Irish Lake!
Jon, I met and worked with Harold in the summer of 1992 at the Indiana Transportation Museum. Is Harold still with us?

Wow they look great.
How wonderful the old world is,they were not in a rat race, every thing was natural, you could be free of tress & make you'r own innervation, now the talents are gone, every thing is made in china,? from a heartless machine.Thank you for showing the wonder ful world of old day's.

Thank you for posting your wonderful video, Jon. I have shared it on the Indiana Cemetery Preservation Group on Facebook. I have ancestors who died in Posey County, Indiana that I am still trying to figure out where they were buried.
Very nice.
very nice video
This is probably your best piece Jon. The audio is perfect, as is the audio and the subject is very engaging.
I expected more. Just a lot of noise.
Thank you, Teri, for the opportunity to learn some new terms and explanations that will help me in my own work!
Very informative and interesting.
How awesome to have something from your family's history.
Thanks so much for your support and all that you do. I think everyone should record their presentations and make them available. It is so easy with ppt.
This is really excellent Jon. Thanks for sharing. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to see it in NOLA, and am grateful to see it here.
Beautiful rug and video production quality! I bet it would be wonderful to sit with Dee Nierman (Dutch heritage?) learn more about weaving rag rugs and listening to more of her stories...:)
I trust he is making sticks in Heaven now!
You know the messed up thing I didn't even know those trophies existed and I'm a member of the family. Then again I'm probably the only grand kid who didn't spend much time around the family.
You are sooo lucky !
